National Football League

The National Football League (NFL) is a professional American football league consisting of 32 teams, divided equally between the National Football Conference (NFC) and the American Football Conference (AFC). The NFL is one of the four major professional sports leagues in North America, and the highest professional level of American football in the world. The NFL’s 17-week regular season runs from early September to late December, with each team playing 16 games and having one bye week. Following the conclusion of the regular season, six teams from each conference (four division winners and two wild card teams) advance to the playoffs, a single-elimination tournament culminating in the Super Bowl, which is usually held on the first Sunday in February, and is played between the champions of the NFC and AFC.

Super Bowl

As the National Football League’s championship game, the Super Bowl is an all-day affair for football enthusiasts and casual viewers alike. The game itself lasts about four hours, and is preceded by a series of pregame shows in which analysts discuss the two teams’ strategies, their players’ strengths and weaknesses, and how they might play together to win the game. There are also typically several musical performances before the game begins, often featuring renowned artists with new music to promote. The 2020 Super Bowl halftime show was headlined by Jennifer Lopez and Shakira.

Thursday Night Football is a weekly series of National Football League (NFL) games that air on Thursday evenings, usually starting in mid-September, and ending in late December or early January. The Cleveland Browns are a professional American football team based in Cleveland, Ohio. The Browns compete in the National Football League (NFL) as a member club of the American Football Conference (AFC) North division. The Browns play their home games at FirstEnergy Stadium, which opened in 1999, with administrative offices and training facilities in Berea, Ohio. The Browns’ official colors are brown, orange and white. Houston Texans

The Houston Texans are a professional American football team based in Houston, Texas. The team competes in the National Football League as a member club of the American Football Conference South division. The Texans first played in 2002 as an expansion team after Houston’s previous franchise, the Houston Oilers, moved to Nashville, Tennessee, where they are now the Tennessee Titans. The team’s majority owner is Bob McNair. While the team mainly struggled in the 2000s, it clinched its first playoff berth during the 2011 season as AFC South division champions. Wade Phillips took over for Kubiak and led them to 9 wins and 7 losses and a division title but got fired on January 1st 2016 after losing 30-0 to Kansas City Chiefs 30-0. Indianapolis Colts

The Indianapolis Colts are a professional football team located in Indianapolis, Indiana. The Colts compete in the National Football League (NFL) as a member club of the league’s American Football Conference (AFC) South division. Since the 2008 season, the Colts have played their games in Lucas Oil Stadium. Previously, the team had played for over two decades (1984–2007) at the RCA Dome.

The Colts are one of the most successful teams in the NFL since moving to Indianapolis, winning two Super Bowls and appearing in another during that time. The team also won an AFC Championship Game in 1995 over the Pittsburgh Steelers and more recently, defeated the Chicago Bears in Super Bowl XLI. Since 1998, the Colts have compiled the second-longest active win streak in the NFL with 15 consecutive wins.

Jacksonville Jaguars

The Jaguars are in the NFL’s American Football Conference South division. They play their home games at TIAA Bank Field. The team was founded in 1993, and started playing in 1995. They have won two division championships, in 1998 and 1999, as well as three conference championships in 1996, 1999, and 2017. Their record of 2-14 in 2012 was tied with the Kansas City Chiefs for the worst record that year. The Jaguars have had one Hall of Fame player inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame: Tony Boselli, an offensive tackle from 1995 to 2001.

Tennessee Titans

The Tennessee Titans are a professional football team based in Nashville, Tennessee. The Titans compete in the National Football League (NFL) as a member club of the American Football Conference (AFC) South division. Previously known as the Houston Oilers, the then-Houston, Texas, the team began to play in 1960 as a charter member of the American Football League (AFL). The Oilers won the first two AFL Championships, and joined the NFL as part of the AFL–NFL merger in 1970.

Denver Broncos

The Denver Broncos are a professional American football franchise based in Denver, Colorado. The Broncos compete as a member club of the National Football League’s American Football Conference West division. They began to play in 1960 as a charter member of the American Football League and joined the NFL as part of the merger in 1970. The Broncos are owned by the Pat Bowlen trust and currently play home games at Empower Field at Mile High. Prior to that, they played at Mile High Stadium from 1960 to 2000, while the team was based at Bears Stadium from its founding in 1960 until its closing due to flooding in 1964.

Kansas City Chiefs

The Kansas City Chiefs are a professional American football team based in Kansas City, Missouri. The Chiefs compete in the National Football League (NFL) as a member club of the league’s American Football Conference (AFC) West division. The team was founded in 1960 as the Dallas Texans by businessman Lamar Hunt and was a charter member of the American Football League (AFL). In 1963, the team relocated to Kansas City and assumed its current name. The Chiefs joined the NFL as a result of the merger in 1970. The team is valued at over $2 billion. Hunt’s son, Clark, serves as chairman and CEO. While Hunt’s ownership stakes passed collectively to his widow and children after his death in 2006, Clark represents the Chiefs at all league meetings and has ultimate authority on personnel changes.

Las Vegas Raiders

The Las Vegas Raiders are a professional American football team based in Las Vegas, Nevada. They compete in the National Football League (NFL) as a member club of the league’s National Football Conference (NFC) West division. Founded on January 30, 1960, it played its first regular-season game on September 10, 1961, as a charter member of the American Football League (AFL) which merged with the NFL in 1970. The Raiders’ off-field fortunes have varied considerably over the years. The team’s first three years of operation (1960–1962) were marred by poor on-field performance, financial difficulties, and spotty attendance. In 1963, however, the Raiders’ fortunes improved dramatically with the introduction of head coach Al Davis.

Los Angeles Chargers

The Los Angeles Chargers are a professional American football team based in the Greater Los Angeles Area. The Chargers compete in the National Football League (NFL) as a member of the league’s American Football Conference (AFC) West division. The club began to play in 1960 as a charter member of the American Football League (AFL), and spent its first season in Los Angeles, before moving to San Diego in 1961 to become the San Diego Chargers. The Chargers joined the NFL as a result of the AFL–NFL merger in 1970, and played their home games at SDCCU Stadium. The return of the Chargers to Los Angeles was announced for the 2017 season, just one year after the Rams had moved back to the city from St. Louis. The Chargers will play their home games at Dignity Health Sports Park until the 2020 opening of the Los Angeles Stadium at Hollywood Park; which they will share with the LA Galaxy.

Chicago Bears

The Chicago Bears are a professional American football team based in Chicago, Illinois. The Bears compete in the National Football League (NFL) as a member club of the league’s National Football Conference (NFC) North division. The Bears have won nine NFL Championships, including one Super Bowl, and hold the NFL record for the most enshrinees in the Pro Football Hall of Fame and the most retired jersey numbers. The Bears have also recorded more victories than any other NFL franchise.

Detroit Lions

The Detroit Lions are a professional American football team based in Detroit, Michigan. Minnesota Vikings

The Minnesota Vikings are a professional American football team based in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The Vikings joined the National Football League (NFL) as an expansion team in 1960, and first took the field for the 1961 season. The team competes in the National Football Conference (NFC) North division.

During the 1960s, the Vikings’ record was typical for an expansion franchise, but improved over the course of the decade, resulting in a Central Division title in 1968. In 1969, their dominant defense led to the Vikings’ league championship, the last NFL championship prior to the merger of the NFL with the AFL.

The Dallas Cowboys are an American football franchise of the National Football League (NFL) based in Dallas, Texas. They are a member club of the league’s National Football Conference (NFC) East division. The team plays their home games at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, which opened for the 2009 season. The stadium took its current name prior to the 2013 season. The Cowboys joined the NFL as an expansion team in 1960. The team’s national following might best be represented by its NFL record of consecutive sell-outs. The Cowboys’ streak of 190 consecutive sold-out regular and post-season games began in 2002. The New York Giants are an American football team based in East Rutherford, New Jersey. They compete in the National Football League (NFL) as a member club of the league’s National Football Conference (NFC) East division. The team plays its home games at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, which it shares with the New York Jets in a unique arrangement. The Giants hold their summer training camp at the Quest Diagnostics Training Center at the Meadowlands Sports Complex.

Philadelphia Eagles

The Philadelphia Eagles are a professional American football team based in Philadelphia. The Eagles compete in the National Football League as a member club of the league’s National Football Conference East division. In the 2017 season the team won Super Bowl LII, their first Super Bowl win in franchise history and their fourth NFL title overall, after winning the Championship Game in 1948, 1949, and 1960.

The Eagles have made 16 total playoff appearances, won six division titles (three NFC East titles), five conference championships, and four NFL championships prior to the Super Bowl era. They are one of the most successful teams in NFL history; only the Dallas Cowboys, New England Patriots, Pittsburgh Steelers, and San Francisco 49ers have more Super Bowl appearances or wins.

Washington Commanders

The Washington Commanders are a professional American football team based in the Washington metropolitan area. They compete in the National Football League (NFL) as a member of the league’s National Football Conference (NFC) East division. The team plays its home games at FedExField in Landover, Maryland; its headquarters and training facility are at Inova Sports Performance Center at Redskins Park in Ashburn, Virginia along with the corporate headquarters. The Commanders’ name originates from “Commander-in-Chief” of the United States, a title shared by the President of the United States and also the head coach of Washington’s football team since 1937.

Atlanta Falcons

The Atlanta Falcons compete in the National Football League (NFL) as a member club of the league’s National Football Conference (NFC) South division. The Falcons joined the NFL in 1965 as an expansion team, after the NFL offered then-owner Rankin Smith a franchise to keep him from joining the rival American Football League (AFL). In their 51 years of existence, the Falcons have compiled a record of 368–465–6 with division championships in 1980, 1998, 2004, 2010, 2012, and 2016. The Falcons have appeared in two Super Bowls, the first during the 1998 season in Super Bowl XXXIII, where they lost to the Denver Broncos 34–19; and the second was eighteen years later, a 43–28 defeat by the New England Patriots in Super Bowl LI.

Carolina Panthers

The Carolina Panthers are a professional American football team based in Charlotte, North Carolina. The Panthers compete in the National Football League, as a member club of the league’s National Football Conference South division. The team is headquartered in Bank of America Stadium in uptown Charlotte; also the team’s home field. They are one of the few NFL teams to own the stadium they play in, which is legally registered as Panther Stadium, LLC. The Panthers are supported throughout the Carolinas; although the team has played its home games in Charlotte since 1996, it played home games at Memorial Stadium in Clemson, South Carolina during its first season.

New Orleans Saints

The New Orleans Saints are a professional American football team based in New Orleans, Louisiana. The Saints currently compete in the National Football League as a member of the league’s National Football Conference South division. The team was founded by John W. Mecom Jr., David Dixon, and the city of New Orleans on November 1, 1966. The Saints began play in Tulane Stadium in 1967.

The Saints won their first NFL championship in Super Bowl XLIV in 2010. The Saints have appeared in 11 playoff seasons and have a postseason record of 12–9. In addition, the Saints have won three NFC Championship Games (in 2006, 2009, and 2018) and have reached the NFC Championship Game six times (in 1990, 2000, 2006, 2009, 2018, and 2019). The Saints have an overall record of 563–478–5 (.539) since their founding in 1967.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are a professional American football team based in Tampa, Florida. The Buccaneers currently compete in the National Football League (NFL) as a member team of the National Football Conference (NFC) South division. Along with the Seattle Seahawks, the team joined the NFL in 1976 as an expansion team. The Bucs played their first season in the American Football Conference (AFC) West division as part of the 1976 expansion plan, whereby each new franchise would play every other franchise over the first two years. After the season, they switched conferences with the Seahawks and became part of the NFC Central division. During the 2002 league realignment, the Bucs joined three former NFC West teams to form the NFC South. The club is owned by the Glazer family, and plays its home games at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa.

Arizona Cardinals

The Arizona Cardinals are a professional American football team based in Glendale, Arizona. The Cardinals compete in the National Football League (NFL) as a member of the league’s National Football Conference (NFC) West division. The Cardinals were founded as the Morgan Athletic Club in 1898, and are the oldest continuously run professional football team in the United States. The Cardinals play their home games at State Farm Stadium, which opened in 2006 and is located in the northwestern suburb of Glendale.

Los Angeles Rams

The Los Angeles Rams are a professional American football team based in the Los Angeles metropolitan area. The Rams compete in the National Football League (NFL), as a member club of the league’s National Football Conference (NFC) West division. The Rams play their home games at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California, which they share with the Los Angeles Chargers. The franchise began in 1936 as the Cleveland Rams, located in Cleveland, Ohio. The club was owned by Homer Marshman and featured players such as William “Bud” Cooper, Harry “The Horse” Mattos, Stan Pincura and Mike Sebastian. Damon “Buzz” Wetzel joined as general manager.

San Francisco 49ers

The San Francisco 49ers are a professional football team located in the San Francisco Bay Area. The team was founded in 1946 as a charter member of the All-America Football Conference (AAFC) and joined the NFL in 1950 after the AAFC merged with the NFL. The 49ers were the first major league professional sports franchise based in San Francisco. The name “49ers” comes from the prospectors who arrived in Northern California in the 1849 Gold Rush. The team is legally and corporately registered as the San Francisco Forty Niners, Ltd., and is the only team located in California to share its name with its home county.

Seattle Seahawks

The Seattle Seahawks are a professional American football team based in Seattle, Washington. The Seahawks compete in the National Football League (NFL) as a member club of the league’s National Football Conference (NFC) West division. They joined the NFL in 1976 as an expansion team. The Seahawks are coached by Pete Carroll. Since 2002, they have played their home games at CenturyLink Field (formerly Qwest Field), located south of downtown Seattle. The Seahawks previously played home games in the Kingdome (1976–1999) and Husky Stadium (1994, 2000–2001).
