The Utah Jazz is a professional basketball team based in Salt Lake City, Utah. The team plays its home games at Vivint Smart Home Arena.
The Jazz was one of the league’s least successful teams during its early years. Although 10 seasons elapsed before the Jazz qualified for their first playoff appearance in 1984, they did not miss the playoffs again until 2004. During the late 1980s, John Stockton and Karl Malone arose as the franchise players for the team and formed one of the most famed point guard–power forward duos in NBA history. Led by coach Jerry Sloan, who took over from Frank Layden in 1988, they became one of the powerhouse teams of the 1990s, culminating in two NBA Finals appearances in 1997 and 1998, where they lost both times to Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls. Both Stockton and Malone moved on in 2003. After missing the playoffs for three consecutive seasons from 2004 to 2006, Deron Williams led an injury-plagued Jazz team to a 41–41 record and a playoff berth in 2007. The team moved on from Williams in 2011, opting to rebuild around Gordon Hayward and Rudy Gobert, but struggled throughout the early 2010s before returning to contention under Quin Snyder after drafting Donovan Mitchell in 2017.
On June 27th, 2017 the Utah Jazz signed center Rudy Gobert to a 4-year, $102 million dollar contract extension. The contract made him one of the highest-paid centers in the league and showed that the Jazz is invested in him. He has become synonymous with this franchise as he has been a valuable player and individual while on the team. In today’s blog post, I’ll be talking about Gobert’s history with the Utah Jazz thus far and what fans can expect from the team and Gobert.
Born in Los Angeles California, Jordan Clarkson is a 6 foot 5-inch shooting guard for the Utah Jazz. Drafted by the Washington Wizards in 2014, he didn’t make the team and was then traded to the Los Angeles Lakers. His contract then was extended to three years and with that extension, he became the first player from the University of Missouri to do so. He then went on to play a major role in helping lead his team to victory against the Boston Celtics at their home arena of TD Garden.
