National Basketball Association

The National Basketball Association (NBA) is a men’s professional basketball league in North America; composed of 30 teams (29 in the United States and 1 in Canada). It is widely considered to be the premier men’s professional basketball league in the world. The NBA is an active member of USA Basketball (USAB), which is recognized by FIBA (also known as the International Basketball Federation) as the national governing body for basketball in the United States. The NBA is one of the four major professional sports leagues in the United States and Canada. NBA players are the world’s best-paid sportsmen, by average annual salary per player.

NBA Playoffs

The NBA Playoffs is a postseason tournament, consisting of two consecutive best of seven series between the winners of both the Eastern Conference and the Western Conference in the National Basketball Association (NBA). It starts with a qualifying round, made up of the four lowest teams in each conference. The winners of this qualifying round, who then face top-seeded teams in each conference, are called the “conference champions”.

NBA Finals

The National Basketball Association Finals is the National Basketball Association (NBA) championship series in North America, contested between the Western and Eastern Conference champions. The first round of postseason play is the playoffs, a single-elimination tournament where two teams play against each other to vie for the conference title. The winners of the Conference Finals receive the Larry O’Brien Championship Trophy. The NBA Finals were initially structured in a 2–2–1–1–1 format. In 1985, to ease the amount of cross-country travel, it was changed to a 2–3–2 format, where the first two and last two games of the series were played at the arena of the team that earned home-court advantage by having the better record during the regular season. In 2014, the 2–2–1–1–1 format was restored. This team hosts the first two games, and the other team hosts the next two games. If needed, the remaining three are played at each team’s home arena alternately.

NBA Champions

In the National Basketball Association (NBA), there are a few teams that are considered the best of the best. When it comes to winning, these teams are the cream of the crop. The NBA is composed of three conferences with each containing 15 teams. There are two rounds of playoffs played with 16 teams from each conference participating in four series or rounds. The winning team of these series become the NBA Champions for that year.

The NBA All-Star Game is an exhibition basketball game that has been held annually since 1951. The league’s celebration of its star players, it was originally the culmination of the NBA season. The event has taken place during the weekend of the NBA All-Star Weekend since 1989, with practice sessions for the Eastern and Western Conference All-Star teams taking place each day before the game.

The Milwaukee Bucks are a professional basketball team based in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The team was founded in 1968 as an expansion team, and play at the Fiserv Forum. Former U.S. Senator Herb Kohl was the long-time owner of the team, but on April 16, 2014, a group led by billionaire hedge fund managers Wes Edens and Marc Lasry agreed to purchase a majority interest in the team from Kohl, a sale which was approved by the owners of the NBA and its Board of Governors one month later on May 16. The team is managed by Jon Horst, the team’s former director of basketball operations, who took over for John Hammond in May 2017.

Denver Nuggets

The Denver Nuggets are a professional basketball team based in Denver, Colorado. The Nuggets compete in the National Basketball Association as a member of the league’s Western Conference Northwest Division. The team was founded as the Denver Larks in 1967 as a charter franchise of the American Basketball Association, but changed its name to Rockets before the first season. It changed its name again to the Nuggets in 1974. After the name change, the Nuggets played for the final ABA Championship title in 1976, losing to the New York Nets.

Minnesota Timberwolves

The Minnesota Timberwolves are an American professional basketball team based in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The Timberwolves compete in the National Basketball Association (NBA) as a member club of the league’s Western Conference Northwest Division. They play their home games at Target Center, their home since 1990. Like most expansion teams, the Timberwolves struggled in their early years, but after the acquisition of Kevin Garnett in the 1995 NBA draft, the team qualified for eight consecutive playoffs and won eight division titles. Oklahoma City Thunder

The Oklahoma City Thunder team represents the state of Oklahoma in the National Basketball Association (NBA). The team was founded in 1967 in Seattle as the SuperSonics, and changed their name to the Thunder in 2008 after moving to Oklahoma City.

New Orleans Pelicans

The New Orleans Pelicans are a professional basketball team based in New Orleans, Louisiana. They play in the NBA’s Western Conference as a member club of the league’s Southwest Division. The team was established as the New Orleans Hornets in the 2002–03 season when then-owner of the Charlotte Hornets, George Shinn, relocated the franchise to New Orleans. Due to the damage caused by Hurricane Katrina in 2005, the franchise temporarily relocated to Oklahoma City, where they spent two seasons officially known as the New Orleans/Oklahoma City Hornets. The team returned to New Orleans full-time for the 2007–08 season. On January 24, 2013, the franchise announced it would rename itself the Pelicans, effective after the conclusion of the 2012–13 season. Their achievements include one division title (in 2008).

San Antonio Spurs

The San Antonio Spurs are a professional basketball team based in San Antonio, Texas. They compete in the National Basketball Association (NBA) as a member of the league’s Western Conference Southwest Division. The team plays its home games at the AT&T Center in San Antonio.

The Spurs are one of four former American Basketball Association (ABA) teams to remain intact in the NBA after the 1976 ABA–NBA merger and are the only former ABA team to have won an NBA championship. The franchise has won NBA championships in 1999, 2003, 2005, 2007, and 2014. As of May 2015, the Spurs had the highest winning percentage among active NBA franchises.
